Mathematics

The Mathematics Curriculum at Gobowen Primary School.

Our  approach to the curriculum is designed to develop children's knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts from the Early Years through to the end of Y6.

To learn mathematics effectively, some things have to be learned before others, e.g. place value needs to be understood before working with addition and subtraction, addition needs to be learnt before looking at multiplication (as a model of repeated addition).

Our emphasis is on number skills first, carefully ordered, throughout our primary curriculum. We ensure there are planned opportunities for children to revisit, re-cap and embed learning. This allows for a greater depth of understanding and supports our commitment of to the mastery of mathematics.

Our ultimate aim is that all children will enjoy learning about mathematics and we believe that by the time they leave Gobowen School, all children should :

•   Have a deep understanding of maths and number.
•   Adopt a  positive and resilient attitude towards mathematics
•    Be competent in mathematics -  knowledge, concepts and skills.
•    Have the ability to solve problems, reason, think logically and work systematically.
•    Be able to talk confidently about the subject using mathematical language.
•    Have an understanding of the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
•    Take responsibility for their own learning.

At Gobowen School we use White Rose Maths as a framework to support the teaching of Mathematics, which enables us to have a consistent approach to learning across the school. Progression across the school is outlined in their Calculation Policies and Ready to Progress mapping. Our school has adopted their policies as our agreed policy for calculation.

For additional support with the teaching of Mathematics. NCETM have produced progression maps for each of the different areas of Maths. These documents illustrate the progression from Year 1 through to Year 6
